The Simón Bolívar Music Foundation (FundaMusical Bolívar) is the governing body of the National System of Youth and Children’s Orchestras and Choirs of Venezuela, commonly known as ‘El Sistema’. It was founded by maestro José Antonio Abreu, for the purpose of systematizing music education and promoting the collective practice of music through symphony orchestras and choruses as a means of social organization and communitarian development. FundaMusical Bolívar is attached to the Ministry of People’s Power for the President’s Office of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
The TED Prize was created as a way of taking the inspiration, ideas and resources that are generated at TED and using them to make a difference. Although the winners receive a prize of $100,000 each, that’s the least of what they get. The real prize is that they are granted a WISH. A wish to change the world.

When Jose Antonio Abreu was awarded the TED Prize this year, he was given $100,000 and one wish to change the world. His wish:
“I wish you would help create and document a special training program for at least 50 gifted young musicians, passionate for their art and for social justice, and dedicated to developing El Sistema in the US and in other countries.”
TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from those three worlds. Since then its scope has become ever broader, with one mission: Spreading ideas.
The annual TED Conference now brings together the world’s most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives (in 18 minutes).
TED.com, in turn, makes the best talks, demos and performances from TED and selected partner conferences available to the public, for free. Some 450 talks from their archive are now available, with more added each week. These videos are released under a Creative Commons license, so they can be freely shared and reposted.
TED believes passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and ultimately, the world.
