Description

“Socio-Cultural Awareness and Culturally Responsive Teaching”

This presentation from the 2019 El Sistema USA National Symposium was led by Monique Van Willingh (Longy School of Music of Bard College), and Hillary Harder (Elkhart County El Sistema)

About the session:

An interactive and experiential workshop that explores culturally responsive teaching through telling our stories, engaging with the stories of students, problem solving real-life scenarios and exploring the difference between a culturally responsive approach versus cultural appropriation. As a group, we will engage with concepts such as othering, prejudice and unconscious bias by understanding the importance of being an ally. We will use intersectionality (the framework that explores the intersection between social divisions such as race, class, gender, sexuality, nation, language, ableism and ageism) as the foundation for our conversation, while learning practical tools about how to create safe and authentic spaces for dialogue.
