Director of Education Job Description

Community MusicWorks (CMW) seeks a Director of Education to work collaboratively with musician-teachers to set the direction and facilitate the success of all education programs at CMW. The Director of Education works with the Artistic Director to set and carry out the strategic direction of programs, new initiatives, and coordination with other parts of the organization’s work.

Community MusicWorks is a community-based music performance and education organization in its 28th year, combining the practices of musicianship, education, and community engagement to support children and families in several urban neighborhoods of Providence, Rhode Island. The MusicWorks Collective professional ensemble is at the center of the organization, and its musicians serve as the faculty for CMW’s programs.

CMW is at an inflection point. Having just moved into its 24,000 square foot purpose-built Center, the organization is exploring how its mission can be amplified through new performance and education programs and new partnerships. The Director of Education’s role will be critical in leading this process and implementing ideas generated by the new strategic plan which center around expanding and deepening students’ learning. 

Principal areas of responsibility for the Director of Education include:

  • Overseeing and supporting all elements of CMW’s educational programming: the Lessons and Ensembles Program and the Daily Orchestra Program, early childhood & adult classes, and aspects of the MusicWorks Collective public programming
  • Finding opportunities for creative interactions of the above programming strands
  • Developing new programming priorities consistent with CMW’s strategic plan
  • Establishing a calendar of programs for the year in partnership with coordinators of the Lessons and Ensembles Program and the Daily Orchestra Program 
  • Ensuring all program planning is done and communicated in a timely way
  • Overseeing implementation and management of student information systems, including Blackbaud Education and SchoolPass
  • Working with development staff on grant applications providing program information such as student benchmark data, and coordinating occasional student involvement in development events 
  • Supervising and supporting 5-8 staff, including full and part-time Resident Musicians, program coordinators, and the Family Engagement Coordinator
  • Planning and coordinating professional development opportunities for musician staff
  • Working collaboratively on ad hoc committees with other staff and organizational leaders as needed (examples include Strategic Planning Committee, Race Equity Task Force, and the Enrollment Expansion Group)

This position has been carried out by a Resident Musician member of our staff, and may combine with performance and teaching roles.

This is a 40 hour / week position, located in Providence, Rhode Island.

Salary range: $70,000-$80,000
