Organization Overview

Founded in 2015, Music Mission San Francisco (MMSF) is an el Sistema-inspired music education program that provides after-school classes free of charge to underserved children at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts in San Francisco’s Mission District. Our goal is to make a positive impact on children using music education as a means to build self-esteem, pride, teamwork, and academic motivation. We strive to inspire our students to make an effective change in their own lives while building skills as conscientious citizens of the world.

Position Summary

Reporting to the president, the violin teaching artist will be responsible for group instruction and basic musicianship for 8-10 violin students ages 7-12. Assignment will include a minimum amount of administrative duties (taking attendance, completing student assessments, etc…). Instruction will take place from 4pm-6pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from mid Sept through late May (approximately 60 classes).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Strong belief in and passion for the El Sistema philosophy
  • Excellent classroom management skills
  • High-quality instruction and basic musicianship to approximately 8-10 violin students
  • Excellent musicianship and artistry as a violin performer
  • Effective classroom management and lesson plans
  • A curriculum in collaboration with the MMSF artistic director
  • Collaboration in a professional and timely manner with parents, MMSF staff, and other teachers
  • Administrative duties as required (student attendance, assessments, etc…)
  • Supervision of students during transition times, breaks, and snack time
  • Assistance with set up and tuning at rehearsals and concerts (perform as needed)
  • Ability to work outside of scheduled class times for meetings, professional development, and scheduled concerts
  • Knowledge of string repertoire
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to remain calm, flexible and willing to assist as needed.

Position Requirements

  • Near completion or Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance or Music Education, Master’s Degree preferred
  • Experience teaching group violin lessons to students of different ages, abilities, cultural, and economic backgrounds
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish a plus
  • Successfully pass a background check
Salary: $60 per hour
