Harmony School is the only El Sistema-inspired after school program in Iowa. Their program is 4th-7th grade, adding one additional grade each year as students grow. Students can play violin, viola, or cello. Harmony is sponsored by Coe College, who offer free classroom and performance space in their campus music building. Thanks to this partnership, Harmony students have the opportunity to work with college mentors and experience college culture.
Annually Harmony produces a day-long festival celebrating music in their community that reaches thousands of Iowans. This year, students from Harmony School of Music were invited to perform at the Iowa Music Awards with hip hop artist and producer DJ Tone Da Boss.
Harmony School appreciates their membership with El Sistema USA!
“Being a member of El Sistema USA has given our young, rural program a network of incredible like-minded professionals that help our program grow. We have learned so much through the Symposiums, online meetings, and other events that have helped us to establish a culture of music for positive social transformation not only for our students, but in our broader community of music organizations as well. Membership in El Sistema USA has been an invaluable resources for us, and we are proud to be part of this organization.”
