Description
The Tocando Music After-school Program located on the U.S.-Mexico Border serves two distinct underresourced communities, one urban the other rural. The teaching artist will demonstrate how they have met the cultural and linguistic needs of the students they serve through virtual and socially distant programming. Forced to move to remote learning, teaching artists were resourceful and creative in maintaining student and parental engagement. The presenters will share how their efforts prevented students from feeling distant and brought joyful experiences. Student and family engagement was possible through culturally responsive programming in which they learned music and also cooked, created digital videos, and participated in drive-through concerts. The audience will learn, discuss, and reflect from video clips how students and their families in Tocando are honored and respected even in a virtual world.
