Position:  String Orchestra Director
Site: Carver Elementary
Status:  Part-Time
Pay: Salaried, $13,944, (over 18 pay periods)
Employment Period: 10-12 hrs. per week  (September – June), (summer work may be available)
Start Date:  September
Reports to:  Program Manager

Summary:

The String Orchestra Director’s main responsibilities are to choose appropriate repertoire, prepare, and direct Level 3/4 String Orchestra; teach a beginning theory class; and serves as the string team leader.  The string team leader will help guide the String Teaching Artists with curriculum pacing. The program is located at Carver Elementary School at 6160 Jefferson Avenue, Newport News, VA, and runs every weekday from 2:45 to 5:15 pm.

Responsibilities:

  • Select and prepare level-appropriate works for performance
  • Inspire students to reach their highest potential, socially and musically
  • Guide students to perform with the proper playing technique
  • Teach music theory and aural skills to Level 2, 3, and 4 students
  • Model and perform for students regularly
  • Manage ensemble interns
  • Communicate with Teaching Artists on areas of student improvement
  • Assist between snack and transitions
  • Assist during bus pick-up
  • Attend field trips when required
  • Keep a record of the ensemble’s and individual progress
  • Fill out evaluation forms for students
  • Communicate student’s progress to parents/guardians when needed
  • Attend professional development sessions
  • Prepare parts and folders for students
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree in music with an emphasis on string instrumental instruction or equivalent experience, minimum of 2 years of teaching experience required
  • Ability to play a stringed instrument
  • Possess a strong understanding of string pedagogy
  • Identify and correct playing issues
  • Strong classroom management skills
  • Desire to work within a social change environment
  • Ability to interact and communicate clearly with a variety of ages (1st grade through Adults)
  • Great interpersonal skills
  • Highly Organized
  • Self-starter
  • Punctual
  • Familiarity with Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Classroom
  • Reliable Transportation
  • Employment is contingent upon a background check
  • Must be able to work occasional nights and weekends due to performances or trips
  • Finalists will be asked to perform on their main instrument and/or display conducting and rehearsal skills at the interview.
