Who You Are

We are seeking one qualified Teaching Artist that specializes on Cello OR Double Bass, and wants the opportunity to work closely with students in small group settings as required. You will be tasked with ensuring that the focus is always on the students and their well-being, and to provide a safe space at Sistema Winnipeg where everyone is welcome regardless of any part of their background. Supervised by the Education & Sistema Manager, working alongside the school’s Divisional Teachers, other Teaching Artists, and Site Administrators you will support and teach social skills through musical education, with goals and curriculum as determined by our Music Director.

Sistema Winnipeg also continuously strives for inclusivity and requires a diverse workforce. We are actively seeking candidates who are Women, Indigenous, Black, visible minorities and people from the LGBTQ2S+ community, as well as those with disabilities. If you are a part of any of these communities, you are encouraged to self-identify in your application. If you require support during the hiring process, please do not hesitate to let us know.

This position will be contracted annually from September to June. You will teach up to two days a week on Tuesday and Wednesdays from 3:45 to 6 PM with a weekly team meeting, along with opportunities for group professional development and training. There may be occasional work on weekends when community events and performances are held. This position is paid at an hourly teaching rate of $40 with hourly administration work paid at $20.

To be successful at the position, you must understand the goal of the program is to create social change through music education and that the musical training we provide is the vehicle to teaching our skills and values to the students. You must also be enthusiastic, flexible, non-judgemental and highly-motivated in a fast-paced environment, while also being patient, communicative and open-minded. We were fortunate to run in-person for most of the Covid-19 pandemic so far during the school year while following safety protocols, but we do require that teachers be capable of teaching remotely from home if and when necessary.

Our Teaching Artists bring their experience as artists in a range of musical styles, to their teaching. While most of our Teaching Artists have a music degree, equivalent performance and/or teaching experience is equally valued. We are also interested in hearing your experiences as an educator, in particular in working with groups of students. Sistema Winnipeg also acknowledges that our team have other opportunities outside our program, and are willing to be flexible when possible.

Sistema Winnipeg also requires successful candidates to provide recent copies of cleared Criminal Record and Child Abuse Registry Checks, no older than six months.
