About Play On Philly

Play On Philly (POP) is a non-profit organization that provides daily, after-school music instruction to over 300 K-12 students. We work in communities that historically have had little or no access to formal music education.

We are seeking a Cello Teaching Artist for our Music Center locations in West Philadelphia. Please note which location(s) or timeframe(s) you are interested in and indicate whether your expertise is in teaching beginner students, intermediate level students, or both. You will lead cello studio classes of approximately 10-12 students and participate in the String Ensemble.

 

Job Description

Teaching Artists (TA) work collaboratively and independently to ensure students are making steady progress on their instruments, music literacy skills, and repertoire and can manage their class to create a safe, welcoming, and rigorous environment in their classrooms and at their Music Centers, at-large. All POP TAs are responsible for encouraging students to adhere to the POP rules and guidelines for student citizenship.

This role is supervised by one of our Program Coordinators and works in partnership with the Program Manager, Music Director, and other POP TAs. As POP team members, TAs actively participate in professional development and continued education to cultivate and hone their teaching skills. We are looking for lifelong learners, and collaboratively natured individuals who enjoy and have experience working with school-aged children (1st – 8th grades), are creative, and can problem-solve and multi-task.

 

A successful candidate:

  • You are passionate about music education.
  • You are calm under pressure.
  • You have experience with teaching groups of five or more students at once.
  • You are excited to serve a community through music.
  • You are open to collaboration and feedback.

Requirements

  • You specialize in cello.
  • At least one year of formal music teaching experience with young people is preferred.
  • Experience with string pedagogy is preferred.
  • You can work occasional nights and weekends as required.

Salary Range

Salary is contingent upon class schedule and scope of work.

$3,750 – $7,750 for Fall session

 

Work Commitment

September 2023 – December 2023, with the potential for a second agreement for the January 2024 – May 2024 Session. The schedule below is an estimate of the hours for this position. Exact days and times TBD based on final enrollment numbers.

  • ICSW: M-F from 7:45am – 9:00am and W from 1:15pm – 4:15pm
  • SRL: M/Th/F from 2:45pm – 5:15pm and T from 1:45pm – 4:15pm
  • SFDS: M/Th from 4:00pm – 5:15pm and T/W from 2:30pm – 5:15pm
