Music Education Director

Hours: Full-Time at 40 hours per week. Reports to the Executive Director.

Compensation: Salary of $60,000. Opportunities for salary increases will be evaluated annually.

Responsibilities:

The Music Education Director is responsible for the management, quality, and growth of all early childhood, after-school, and summer programs at the El Sistema Colorado Music Center.  Areas of responsibility include oversight of each program, management of all El Sistema Colorado teaching and site staff, pedagogical and program planning and evaluation, collaboration with school and community partners, and family engagement.  This is a full-time position, hired by and directly accountable to the Executive Director of El Sistema Colorado.

Program Oversight Functions:

  • Ensure that El Sistema Colorado’s philosophy and mission are practiced consistently throughout the program.
  • Drive towards greater equity, inclusion, and access in all aspects of the program alongside Impact Education DEI consultants.
  • Recruit and retain students to operate programs at full capacity throughout the school year. We are looking to grow the afterschool and early childhood program to serve over 190 students in the 2021-22 school year.
  • Manage, evaluate, and cultivate a healthy team of eight to ten part-time
  • Teaching Artists and a part-time Site Coordinator for the after school program.
  • Plan and supervise implementation of frequent evening and weekend special events/performances by El Sistema Colorado students in collaboration with staff, partners, and volunteers.
  • Coordinate the procurement and repair of all needed instruments and equipment for successful daily program implementation and performances.
  • Recruit and train the highest quality individuals to serve as Teaching Artists, Substitute Teaching Artists, Teaching Fellows, and Volunteers.
  • Collaborate with Site Coordinator to maintain excellent communication with parents/guardians and promote family engagement.
  • Assist Executive Director in developing organizational goals and objectives consistent with the mission and vision of El Sistema Colorado.
  • Implement El Sistema Colorado services, activities and operational policies in partnership with relevant schools and partners to ensure all program objectives are met.
  • Assist the Executive Director in establishing and managing an annual ESC program budget.
  • Develop a long-range growth plan with the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
  • Assist Executive Director in the development and implementation of El Sistema Colorado policies and procedures.
  • Utilize the VISTA volunteer to support programming initiatives.

Curriculum Development and Teacher Evaluation:

  • Develop and employ excellent, age-appropriate pedagogical teaching methods, curriculum, and repertoire consistent with El Sistema core principles, incorporating best practices found in national and international El Sistema inspired programs which demonstrate superior outcomes.
  • Work with Executive Director and contracted Impact Education consultants to ensure that program principles and practices are in line with best practices to create an environment of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Institutionalize benchmark expectations for student musical and leadership progress.
  • Establish and support partnerships in collaboration with the Executive Director to promote student learning and development.
  • Implement professional development for teaching artists and site staff to maintain excellent standards in the El Sistema Colorado classroom.
  • Supervise El Sistema Colorado Teaching Artists, Site Coordinator and Volunteers, ensuring the highest level of unified program implementation possible.
  • Annually evaluate Teaching Artists and Site staff performance, including periodic written and oral reviews.
  • Collaborate with El Sistema Colorado Executive Director, Teaching Artists, students, and families, in program evaluation.
  • Use data collection and analysis for the purpose of continuous program improvement and to communicate successes and challenges with stakeholders.

Community Partnerships

  • Participate in community and fundraising events, and public relations activities.
  • Engage and activate ESC’s parent community to further the mission of the program.
  • Work with the VISTA Volunteer, Site Coordinator, and university partners to manage the Sistema Fellowship program to provide free private lessons for students.

Desired Skills and Experiences

  • Bachelors or Masters Degree in Music Education or 5+ years of classroom/group music teaching experience
  • Based on the community that we serve, fluency in speaking/reading/writing Spanish is highly desirable.
  • Strong commitment to El Sistema’s philosophy of social change through music and the mission of El Sistema Colorado.
  • Strong knowledge of culturally responsive music pedagogy.
  • Exceptional classroom management skills and experience leading ensembles.
  • Experience working with children and community members from diverse racial, ethnic, and economic backgrounds; experience working in underserved communities.
