El Sistema Colorado – Director of Development
The Director of Development performs a wide range of fundraising, data maintenance, and marketing functions. Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the ideal candidate is a self-starter who can work independently, as well as collaboratively to meet all revenue targets. A key priority is maintaining excellent donor relations and database systems. The Development Director ensures the timely coordination of all ESC actions related to fund development (i.e., individual donors, government contracts, foundations, corporate and community members) for the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
This position is responsible for building a high-end philanthropic strategy to diversify and bring in revenue streams through grants, donations, a signature fundraising event, and other sources of philanthropic support to meet our current budget of $665,555. This position will also analyze fundraising/financial data and develop a strategic plan to increase brand awareness and funding.
Areas of Responsibility
Fundraising (25%)
-Build and manage ESC’s sustainable, multi-source development plan to raise $665,555 in the coming fiscal year (August 1, 2023 to July 31, 2024). This work supports the Executive Director in meeting fundraising goals.
-Create an annual development plan to implement fundraising goals.
-Develop and train Board Members on fundraising practices and support.
-Keep the strictest of confidence regarding all donor and financial information.
-Update the Executive Director and board regularly and promptly on status changes in all fundraising activities, revenue impact and important operational changes.
-Lead all fundraising events and activities.
-Obtain financial support and sponsorship for the organization; maintain ongoing relationships with all donors and look for new donors and sponsors; effectively motivate donors. Prepare and execute fundraising plans that include major gifts programs, annual fund strategies, planned giving, and fundraising events and campaigns.
-Streamline donor stewardship.
-Create and present development reports for the Board of Directors that analyze and measure the progress toward fundraising goals.
-Build the fundraising committee and collaborate with members to develop strategies for increasing brand awareness and funding.
-Take advantage of community relations, speaking engagements, fundraising events, and communication tools like newsletters and social media platforms to reach donors and sponsors.
Grants & Reporting (55%)
-Update ESC Common Grant Application and Annual Impact Report.
-Complete and submit all grant invoices, award letters, grant reports in a timely manner.
-Update internal grants calendar and track progress of awards.
-Collaborate with programming to gather and collect data to meet the requirements for grant reports.
-Internal Reporting: Create gift reports and assist ED with operational updates in Cashflow and Budget as it relates to grants.
Organization (15%)
-Manage Donor database: Maintain up-to-date, accurate donor records and timely, donor acknowledgements and communications.
-Coordinate strategic donor meetings with staff and/or board members.
-Assist in the organization and development of a strong volunteer database.
-Other duties as assigned.
Marketing & Website (5%)
-Coordinate development activities with ESC’s marketing strategy and messaging, in conjunction with the Executive Director, including a well-planned year-end annual giving campaign that optimizes all fundraising opportunities (e-blasts, social media, targeted mailings, Colorado Gives Day, etc.).
-Manage website and social media with Admin Team.
-Create and deliver a monthly organization newsletter.
-Promptly update the ESC website with changes made to the program and organization.
Desired Qualifications
-Embraces the mission of El Sistema Colorado.
-Minimum 3-5 years of experience in nonprofit fundraising administration.
-Experience developing government contracts for grants.
-Highly organized and efficient with a track record of follow-through.
-Strong interpersonal, speaking and writing skills.
-High level of competence with technology and familiarity with Google Suite.
-Demonstrated ability to acquire corporate support.
-Preferred experience with DonorPerfect, Fundraise Up and Canva.
-Experience creating marketing plans and marketing materials.
-Initiative: self-directed, able to set clear targets and achieve results.
-Collaborative: works well with others to listen, solve problems and achieve common goals.
-Communication: promptly shares with others as appropriate; can negotiate/persuade as needed.
-Adaptable: open to change and new ideas, handles pressure, deadlines and adjusts to meet changing needs.
-Comfortable making asks for five to six figure donations.
-Availability some evenings and weekends for events.
-Bilingual in English / Spanish preferred but not required.
Compensation & Benefits:
$60,000 – $75,000 commensurate with experience.
