JOB DESCRIPTION

Organizational Summary: 

OrchKids is a year-round, during and after school, music program designed to create social change and nurture promising futures for youth in Baltimore City neighborhoods. Under Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s Music Director/OrchKids Founding Director, Marin Alsop’s artistic leadership and direction, OrchKids is the cornerstone of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s community engagement efforts across the city. Founded in 2008 with 30 students at one elementary school – with seed funding from Marin Alsop and Founding Donors Rheda Becker and Robert E. Meyerhoff, OrchKids now works with ten schools in Baltimore City, serving close to 2,000 children from Pre-K through 12th grade.

In collaboration with several community partners, including Baltimore City Public Schools, OrchKids provides music education, instruments, academic instruction, meals, as well as performance and mentorship opportunities at no cost to students and families. OrchKids is an acknowledged leader in the El Sistema-inspired and social-change through music movement throughout the world and serves as a replicable model for other cities.

 

Job Summary: 

The OrchKids Director of Programs is responsible for setting the vision and infrastructure for all OrchKids program offerings. Leading, globally, all program teams, the Director of Programs helps craft daily program operations, program model design and artistic initiatives. The Director of Program works closely with the education team leader to ensure quality control for all the learning programs and collaborates on providing professional development experiences for Teaching Artists and administrative staff. The Director of Programs is critical in setting high expectations for program culture, program operations and artistic initiatives. Similarly, the Director of Programs helps maintain program data and metrics that analyze overall program health and efficacy. In this role, the Director of Programs is also essential to the long-term strategic development of the OrchKids program and is a key part of the Leadership team. This position works closely with the head of Education, Director of Operations and Strategic Partnerships, and Director of Development.

 

LEADERSHIP/TEAM DEVELOPMENT:

Direct and supervise all program development, site program operations and program design models for OrchKids
Ensure that OrchKids programming is culturally-responsive, trauma-informed, and authentically representing the communities OrchKids is serving
Establish culture and infrastructure for high quality implementation of all OrchKids programming
Direct and cultivate program-wide artistic goals
Establish, initiate, and manage program partnerships in collaboration with the education team leader and Director of Operations and Strategic Partnerships
Supervise all Program Managers and adapt a strong culture of coaching and personal development
Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach: assign accountabilities; set objectives; establish priorities; and monitor and evaluate results.
Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and reflective practices
Collaborate with the education team leader on developing recruitment strategies for teaching artists
Oversee and manage hiring for program administrative staff
Oversee and manage localized HR matters and serve as the connection to the larger HR department of the BSO
Implement and train on trauma-informed programming and best practices inclusive of cultivating/leading professional development opportunities
Collaborate with other members of the OrchKids Leadership Team to establish policies that promote OrchKids’ culture and vision
Work in collaboration with the education team leader to lead on curriculum and high-quality education goals
Coordinate the maintenance of OrchKids’ Standard Operating Procedures policies and any other documents related to program operations or archived materials
Maintain and craft programming narrative that is shared with external stakeholders
Collaborate with Director of Development on donor engagement activities
Cultivate OrchKids’ national presence by attending conferences and networking events
FISCAL MANAGEMENT:

Direct and oversee site program budgets and development
Supervise program implementation to ensure strong fiscal management and budget adherence
Coordinate regular check ins with program staff on financial statuses
Lead on program operation budget priorities for each fiscal/program year
PROGRAM DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT:

·  Oversee and support the design of site programmatic frameworks and schedules for all OrchKids sites

·  Design global program models for in-school and after school offerings

·  Work collaboratively with the education team lead and Director of Operations and Strategic Partnerships to create/implement artistic content for OrchKids programs including, new artistic programming, guest artists and larger collaborative projects/workshops

·  Direct and oversee program data management system collection and reporting; create program-wide templates and processes for program site use

·  Evaluate performance of site programs by analyzing and interpreting data and metrics and coach Program Managers on sustainable solutions and problem-solving

·  Support and initiate the design of cross-site opportunities and programming

·  Oversee student pathway development through program model design and oversee program partnerships related to student growth and advancement

·  Work closely with Executive Director and other Leadership Team members to evaluate programming and design strategic adjustments to current and new OrchKids programming

 

ARTISTIC AND EDUCATION OVERSIGHT:

Collaborate with the education team leader on existing program framework offerings and educational initiatives
Collaborate with program staff on developing new offerings and programs
Oversee the design and development of new programs and offerings for the expansion and growth of OrchKids
Oversee program artistic quality for internal and external performances
Direct and oversee the development of program-wide artistic direction and establishing key partnerships to support the overall artistic vision
OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED

POSITION EXPECTATIONS:

·  The Director of Programs is a key member of the OrchKids Leadership Team

·  The Director of Programs is expected to interact with all program teams and teaching artists

·  The Director of Programs is expected to interact with and hold organizational committee positions to represent the interests of the OrchKids program and students with the larger BSO community

·  The Director of Programs attends all leadership and team meetings to represent a critical voice to the direction of the program

·  The Director of Programs holds the strictest confidence in dealing with all personnel issues and HR concerns

·  The Director of Programs continually analyzes and brainstorms on new program offerings and prepares these ideas for presentation among the larger OrchKids team regularly

·  The Director of Programs encourages and models effective and inclusive communication methods

·   The Director of Programs will spend time visiting programs regularly and regularly participating in programming logistics, concert preparation and execution and any other areas of support

·  The Director of Programs will be one of many team members that will be external-facing for the program and maintains sound knowledge at all times of program offerings, program design and program direction

·  The Director of Programs will spend a large amount of time cultivating and nurturing relationships and a significant amount of time setting up processes and policies, adjusting the latter as needed with or without direct mandates

 

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATION:

·       Experience in leadership role either in an education or arts administrative setting

At least 5-years experience working in an education or arts administrative setting
Experience cultivating and designing artistic programming
Experience with leading and collaborating on strategic planning initiatives
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain partnerships
Familiarity with Baltimore City School System or other school systems
Strong attention to detail and ability for analyzing data and metrics
Experience leading, coaching and managing a team of direct and indirect reports
Personal commitment to social justice, restorative educational and anti-racist practices, as well as trauma-informed philosophies
Demonstrated effective planning and organizational skills, able to meet deadlines
Personal leadership through example, coupled with ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and staff to create a results-driven, team-oriented environment
Ability to multi-task calmly and to handle emergencies effectively
Effective public speaking skills and presence
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong managerial and people skills, and the ability to maintain tact, diplomacy and the strictest confidence as       needed
Ability to handle multiple interruptions and adjustments to priorities throughout the day
Personal integrity and strict code of confidentiality and professionalism
Strong commitment to the philosophy of social change through music
Ability to handle numerous projects simultaneously
Ability to implement projects from conception to completion with minimal supervision
Proficient in Microsoft programs, and ability to learn other software programs as needed
Basic knowledge of the symphonic repertoire preferred
Teaching experience preferred
Ability to work nights and weekends, as required
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
Successful completion of a background check
