String Teacher Workshops
The Bornoff Foundation for the Advancement of String Education (FASE) is proud to collaborate with El Sistema USA to offer teaching artists from member programs accessible training opportunities this summer.
Applicants must be an employee of an El Sistema USA member organization in good standing and must indicate on the application that they are applying in partnership with El Sistema USA.
The Bornoff Foundation offers teacher training, student books, digital tools, grants, and ongoing support for programs interested in a more efficient and inclusive approach to strings. The Bornoff approach is a comprehensive skills-based pedagogy scaffolding from students’ first sounds to collegiate level techniques. Accessible frameworks help students organize concepts and master skills quickly, producing confident string players who can apply their learning to any style of music. Bornoff designed his system for the group class setting, organically embedding strategies for adaptive lesson pacing and individual student differentiation that are vital to equity-making for students who cannot access private lessons.
There are two workshop formats available to El Sistema USA members this summer:

Pedagogy for Mixed Instrument Classes; Strategies for Literacy, Musicianship,
Improvisation, and Agency
In Person
- National Bornoff Workshop, July 8-14 at The University of Arizona (Tucson)
- $200 for El Sistema USA Members
- Featured Artist: Julie Lyonn Liebermann, world music specialist
- Topics: Beginning-Advanced String Techniques; Adaptive Lesson Pacing &
Creative Review; Rehearsal Strategies & Conducting; Curriculum Mapping;
Diverse Repertoire, Popular Styles & Improvisation; Trauma Informed Pedagogy;
Inclusive Classroom Practices
Attendees are invited to PLAY throughout our workshops, making these an excellent option for teachers needing to refine personal technique on secondary instruments, too. Financial assistance is available through the foundation’s grant program for anyone needing support for the in-person workshop.
